Summary: A siren is invited to a card game with four gentlemen players and discovers that the stakes are higher than she expected. It’s winner-take-all in a pot that includes her friend’s villa, her secret stash of treasures, and, well, her.

For dinner that evening, I wore my hair up and decided on a turtleneck dress with long sleeves. Although the shimmery bronze fabric clung to my body, the only flesh it revealed was a glimpse of my legs through the slit in back. As was my custom, especially in the summer, I had nothing on underneath. Having lived through long eras of corsets, tights, and a shock of contraptions that thrust iron and whalebone into sensitive flesh, I felt I had paid my dues.

When I reached the foot of the stairs, I noticed Connor loitering in the hallway that led to the dining area. Lucy sat next to him. The dog was remarkably poised unlike her companion, who managed to look rumpled even in a tuxedo. His cream-colored jacket was unbuttoned. He wore no waistcoat and his black tie was loose and slightly off-kilter.

What was it about this man that turned me into such a peevish snob? If I were honest with myself, I’d have to admit he looked perfectly delicious. And if I were truly honest, I’d admit I liked the tight bathing trunks better.

“You’re thinking I’m overdressed, aren’t you?” he said.

“No,” I said. “Perhaps you’re projecting.”

“Well if it’s any consolation, I’m not wearing underwear.”

“Neither am I,” I replied. “Come on, Lucy.”

To my delight, the dog followed me into the dining room, with Connor in tow.
